Hitachi Tokyo: 6501

Hitachi Energy's queue will outlast its new factories. At ¥5,840, Hitachi already prices in most of what that is worth.

What would prove the thesis wrongThe shares close above ¥7,300 or below ¥4,400 in October 2027, or Hitachi Energy's fiscal 2026 adjusted EBITA margin lands below 14 per cent against the 14.8 per cent forecast, or its backlog falls below 2.5 times its revenue over the previous four quarters at two quarter ends in a row before October 2027.

What would turn this into a callA price below about ¥5,600, where my base value would sit 15 per cent above it, or Hitachi raising its fiscal 2027 target for Hitachi Energy above US$28 billion of revenue at a 16 per cent adjusted EBITA margin.

The call in brief

  1. Hitachi Energy makes power transformers, HVDC links and high voltage switchgear. At the end of June it had US$63.6 billion of orders waiting, 3.06 times its revenue over the previous four quarters, and Hitachi plans to keep that ratio at 2.5 to 3 times through fiscal 2030.
  2. The October claim holds. Orders ran 1.66 times revenue last year and 2.16 times in the June quarter, and the new factories are tied to signed orders. The queue sets Hitachi Energy's revenue. Hitachi's plan, US$20 billion in fiscal 2025 to US$36 billion in fiscal 2030, implies about 12 per cent growth a year, with margin doing the rest.
  3. Hitachi Energy is not listed on its own. It is 32 per cent of Hitachi's forecast revenue for fiscal 2026, 37 per cent of its adjusted EBITA, and 46 per cent of my sum of the parts value.
  4. At ¥5,840 the market values Hitachi Energy at about 16 times my fiscal 2027 estimate of its adjusted EBITA if the rest of Hitachi is valued at my base multiples. My base case is worth about ¥6,430, 10 per cent above the price, within a range of ¥4,930 to ¥7,970.
  5. My call: no call, with medium conviction. I would revisit below about ¥5,600, or if Hitachi lifts its fiscal 2027 target for Hitachi Energy above US$28 billion of revenue at a 16 per cent margin.
