Eaton NYSE: ETN

Eaton has a year of orders waiting. At US$366, the shares price in the margin it lost this year, not the margin it gets back.

What proves it wrongElectrical Americas operating margin is below 29 per cent in the fourth quarter of 2026, after Eaton said price and cost would be back in balance in the second half; or 2026 adjusted earnings per share land below the US$13.40 bottom of Eaton's guide; or Electrical Americas backlog over its previous four quarters of sales falls for two consecutive quarters before mid 2027.

The call in brief

  1. Eaton's Electrical Americas business makes switchgear, UPS systems and prefabricated electrical rooms. At the end of June its backlog was US$15.2 billion, 12.6 months of its sales over the previous four quarters, up from 11.2 months a year earlier.
  2. The October claim holds on everything published so far. The queue has lengthened in each of the last five quarters, orders ran 1.3 times sales, and the third quarter results on 3 November are the next test.
  3. The queue had a cost. Electrical Americas margin fell from 29.9 per cent in 2025 to 25.6 per cent in the first quarter of 2026, which Eaton put down mainly to commodity inflation. Eaton expects price and cost to be back in balance in the second half.
  4. At US$366.11 the shares trade at 22.5 times 2027 consensus earnings, down from 34 times this year's guide at the August high. Twenty-three times my 2028 estimate of US$18.85 a share, for the business without Mobility, gives US$434, 18 per cent above the price.
  5. My call: long, with a target of US$430 and low conviction. The base value clears my 15 per cent bar by three points, and one turn less on the multiple would make it no call.
